2009 Monhegan Painting Trip

Here I am painting a view of the ocean by Gull Rock on Monhegan Island Maine.

This years weather during my week was 4 sunny days and 3 overcast or fog, which was not bad considering the summer we've had in New England. Soon I will be posting paintings done during this trip, enjoy.

I was in the North End of Waterbury painting this house. It is a rough section of town, many For Sale, For Rent and Foreclosure signs. I was told by one of my numerous visitors that it is a drug infested area. The woman who lives in the house came out and not too happy I was painting her house. In a thick Jamaican accent she said, "I give you Voodoo, your a Scientist your a Cop" all the while making signs of the cross and squeezing a half-cut lime! I said,"Lady do you think a cop could paint like this?" She continued asking "Of the thousands of houses in Waterbury why did I choose her house to paint", finally I said, "Lady, you are lucky, I chose your house and you won the Rick Daskam Lottery!" This was all too much, now I know why I like painting in a field beside a stream!

I was asked to do a demonstration for SCAN (The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown). I was given 90 minutes to talk and paint. It was fun and there were plenty of intelligent questions. In the fall, I will be teaching a Still Life Painting Class and as of last week it was sold out.

2008 Painting on Monhegan

This photo was taken on my July 2008 trip to Monhegan Island by David and Grace, Thanks guys. I usually wear a long sleeve shirt over a t-shirt. It blocks the suns rays from my skin and the left shoulder doubles as a paint rag, as I occasionally wipe my finger on it. Also I'm wearing "painters pants". Well, the painting does have a house in it!

Monhegan Dump

This is a painting of the Monhegan Dump. All kinds of burnable waste awaits it's firery fate. I found this 10' high mound amusing and wanted to paint it. I was running short of canvas and noticed a door panel in the trash and thought, "Perfect, a panel to paint on from the subject of the painting!"

That's me painting on Monhegan Island, July of 2006. Whitehead is behind me and I am looking towards Gull Rock. Just prior to this picture being taken I stepped back to get a look at my painting, when a gust of wind came up and took my palette for a sail into the Atlantic Ocean. Fortunately I carry extra painting panels and used one as my new palette!
